Our Goals
The AWP works to proactively address and balance impacts in the Animas River watershed, including ecological and social stressors driving ecosystem change to achieve the following goals:
- Improve and maintain watershed health and water quality through partnerships, restoration, and across management boundaries;
- Improve aquatic and riparian wildlife habitat conditions and increase biodiversity;
- Scale up restoration efforts by implementation of carefully designed projects;
- Support community-based sustainable resource-based economies, such as agriculture and recreation and increase river access to enable economically viable rural communities to thrive
- Decrease the potential impacts of catastrophic wildfires and floods;
- Protect communities & infrastructure; and
- Provide public education and outreach about river health, access, recreation and community water use.
The Landscape
|
Currently the AWP focuses primarily on the Animas River and tributaries from approximately Bakers Bridge (County Road 250 at the north end of the Animas Valley) to the Colorado and New Mexico State line and may include lands on the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. While current funding sources are restricted to projects within the State of Colorado, in the future, efforts may be extended upstream into the headwaters of the Animas River watershed as well as the portions in New Mexico if/when time and appropriate funding allows.
